AWS Finland September Meetup - Sponsored by Cirit

September was a busy month for the AWS Finland User Group, with two meetups scheduled back to back. The first one was sponsored by Cirit Oy and held at Allianssi-sali on Asemapaallikonkatu, about a 10-minute walk from Pasila station. Doors opened at 17:30 with the program starting at 18:00.

The talks covered an impressive range of Finnish companies building serious things on AWS. Juha Varkki, Lead Architect at Kempower, spoke about the importance of data in IoT and EV charging, and the serverless platform they built to support it. Dipesh Yadav, Lead Software Engineer at Vaisala, walked through how they approach domain-driven designed microservices at Vaisala Industrial Measurements. Mikolas Hamalainen, Head of Engineering at Varjo, closed the technical sessions with a look at how Varjo utilizes cloud to stream high-fidelity VR and XR content – a fascinating use case that had the audience asking plenty of questions.

75 attendees joined us for the evening, and the best part was that the event ended with a sauna session opening at 20:00. Nothing says Finnish tech community quite like following up talks on serverless IoT platforms and VR streaming with a proper sauna. The combination of strong technical content and that uniquely Finnish social touch made this one of the more memorable meetups of the year.
